The Promised Land, The Land promised to Abraham and his descendants forever.
Canaan is often described as “a land flowing with milk and honey”, a description emphasizing the productive and abundant qualities of the land.
Prior to near complete conquest by the Israelites under King David (approx. 1000 BC), the land was occupied by many people groups, but most notably the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
This is a particular land located in and around the modern state of Israel. According to Numbers 34, it’s borders are generally:
- West: Mediterranean Sea
- East: Jordan River and “Great” River (probably the Euphrates)
- South: River of Egypt (probably Wadi el-Arish in Sinai Peninsula)
- North: Mount Hor and Lebo-Hamath (probably modern Labweh, Lebanon)
