Adam

Adam

Adam means “man”. He was the first human creation of God.

According to the Bible, God created Adam from the dust of the earth and breathed life into him. Adam was given dominion over all the animals and was placed in the Garden of Eden. In the Garden, God gave him a single prohibition…he should not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

God brought the animals to Adam, who gave them names. Adam also named the first woman.

Both Adam and the woman were created in the image of God.

In the Garden, the woman was tempted by a crafty serpent (Satan) and ate the fruit from the forbidden tree. Adam also ate the fruit. In this, they both sinned against God, resulting in the death penalty for their disobedience. As a consequence, they were expelled from the Garden of Eden, and an angel guarded the tree of life.

Yet, before they were exiled from the Garden, God promised that a descendant (seed) of Eve would eventually come to defeat the serpent. This is the first promise of the coming of Jesus in the Bible.

After God gave this hope to the couple, Adam named the woman Eve.

Adam and Eve began having children, and from them the earth was populated.
